Pétanque » rules of the game
  1. In a game, two teams participate:
    • 3 players versus 3 players – i.e. triplets (every player has 2 balls)
    • 2 players versus 2 players – i.e. doubles (every player has 3 balls)
    • 1 player versus 1 player – i.e. singles (every player has 3 balls)
  2. Steel balls, and a smaller wooden ball, called a ˊjackˊ, are used in the game.
  3. The team to commence the game is chosen by toss of a coin.
  4. The commencing player, standing with both legs on the starting line, throws the ˊjackˊ at the distance of 6-10 m, maintaining a 1 m distance from obstacles (walls, trees).
  5. Later on, the commencing player throws the ball as near the ˊjackˊ, as possible. Both feet of the throwing player must be on the starting line and be in touch with the surface until the moment of touching the ground by the ball.
  6. Next, the player of the opposite team assumes a standing position on the starting line and attempts to place the ball nearer the ˊjackˊ than the competitor, or hit the other teamˊs ball out. The ball nearer the ˊjackˊ leads.
  7. When two balls which are nearest to the target belong to the competing teams and they are at the same distance from the target, three cases are possible:
    • If both of the teams have no more balls to play with, the game is regarded invalid, and the target belongs to the team which won points in the previous game.
    • If only one of the teams has balls to play with at disposal, it plays with them and wins as many points as many balls it will place nearer to the target than the nearest ball of the competitorsˊ team.
    • If both of the teams have balls to play with at disposal, the team which played the last ball and the competitorsˊ team play alternately, until one of the teams wins a point.
  8. The game is continued by the team whose ball is farther from the ˊjackˊ. It is done until the moment in which the ball of the team is placed nearer the ˊjackˊ; alternatively, the team may give up on its turn.
  9. When the losing team runs out of the balls or gives up on its turn, the opposing team attempts to place the rest of its balls nearer to the ˊjackˊ, or gives up on its turn. When both of the teams have no more balls, score is calculated. The winning team receives as many points as many balls it has placed nearer the ˊjackˊ than the opposing team.
  10. A player from the team which won throws the ˊjackˊ from the starting line where it has recently been, and the game is recommenced. The team which is the first to collect 13 points wins.
