Kinds of fossils

Fossils are the rarest type of complete fossils, which include organisms with well-preserved soft tissues, sometimes in an almost unchanged, thanks to a special coincidence (freezing, such as asphalt preservation, mummification, etc.).

Peculiar form of fossilized remains are preserved in amber (fossil resin that is derived from various species of trees) and limestone martwicach.

Another type of fossils are:

  • cast – type fossils in the rock which is preserved in negative external surface of soft and hard body parts of organisms, fossils or hard parts of their center.
Mostly in the form of fingerprints found fossils of plants, often shells of molluscs, brachiopods, graptolites colonies, rarely arthropods and echinoderms frustules. In the form of fingerprints are also found some traces of movement of animals on the sediment surface (such as dinosaur footprints).
  • medium – the type of fossils, which form a natural cast of empty space on the hard fossils etched elements relevant or soft parts of organisms. Empty spaces can be filled with fine sediment or crystallized in these spaces, minerals.
Depending on the type of filling is distinguished by:
    • on internal molds inside – fill the empty space on the soft parts, or body cavities, arising from the external pickling (the lining of them) hard elements, such as mollusc shells (especially ammonites, gastropods, bivalves). The centers reflect the internal morphology of the inner surfaces of the hard parts of organisms,
    • on internal molds External – filling voids
In the form of external medium are also preserved
    some trace fossils,
  • trace fossil, ichnofosylium - fossilized trail of an animal life activity (eg foraging, digging in the sediment, tracks, feces).
