One should remember that it is difficult to discover dinosaurs in Poland, because our country is covered by the thick layer of kenozoic rocks from the period after the extinction of dinosaurs.
The main dates in the history of dinosaur discoveries in Poland
- 1959 – Władysław Karaszewski from the Polish Geological Institute in Warsaw started work in the area, adjacent to Góry Świętokrzyskie.
- 1963-71– so-called „Golden Age” of Polish paleonthology, during which Polish-Mongolian Paleonthological Expeditions to the Gobi Desert took place.
- 1983 – in Warsaw, the Museum of Evolution was opened; there, one may admire, among others, the reconstructions of dinosaurs skeletons, found by the Polish team in the course of exploring the Gobi Desert.
- 2000 – the commencement of excavations in Krasiejów in the Opole province; amonng numerous late-Triassic fossils, there are remains of a ˊpradinosaurˊ, described in 2003 by Jerzy Dzik under the name Silesaurus opolensis. The controversial Triassic Silesaurus opolensis from the famous Polish site in Krasiejów, in the commune of Ozimek, was most likely an archosaur, and not, as it had initally been assumed, a dinosaur.
Findings of the dinosaurs traces in Poland

- Jakubów near Przysucha – here, a footprint of the theropod was found.
- Gliniany Las near Minów – the local finding belongs to the richest in terms of the presence of trace fossils.
- Zapniów – paleontholoists discovered the traces of the theropod and herbivorous bird-pelvis dinosaurs there.
- Idzikowice near Opoczna – the footprints theropod were found here.
- The area around Opatów – here, in old quarries, created in the Jurassic, traces of dinosaurs and remains of Jurassic plants were found.
- Iłża ̶ in the quarries located there, the traces of allosaurs and sauropods have recently been discovered.
